GENERAL MOTORS STRIKE
On September 15, 2019 the United Auto Workers Union went on strike against General Motors after the end of the most recent four-year working contract. Approximately 40,000 workers around the United States walked out of over 50 G.M. plants in the country on September 16, 2019. Some of the big changes the U.A.W were fighting for include better pay, job security, more healthcare benefits, and giving temporary workers permanent status at a faster rate. Six weeks later, the strike ended on October 25, with only 57% of all of the U.A.W workers in the country voting to accept the new contract G.M. proposed. In Rochester, over 80% of the workers voted to reject the new contract. In this portrait series I illustrate how the strike personally affected the hundreds of G.M. workers in Rochester, NY.
